If God loves us as his own children, why doesn't he aspire for us to grow and become independent of him?
Every good parent wants their children to grow up, leave the home, and become independent adults. But God apparently intends for us to grow old living in his basement, never achieving self-sufficiency or complete personhood. That seems completely dysfunctional.
Why doesn't God want us to become "spiritual adults", and to live independent lives without relying on him for our needs?

Let's start with this:
"Why doesn't God want us to become "spiritual adults", and to live independent lives without relying on him for our needs?
Does this question REALLY need to be asked?
Wars, greed, murder, corruption, poverty, sexual promiscuity, diseases........need I go on?
This is what happens when men CHOOSE to live independently of God.
In the Garden of Eden, when Adam & Eve walked with God, they had everything that they needed. But when they disobeyed God, when they CHOSE to be independent of His leading & direction.....well, we all know what happened.
And as for this:
But God apparently intends for us to grow old living in his basement, never achieving self-sufficiency or complete personhood. That seems completely dysfunctional.
I have just proved that man is incapable of being self-sufficienct.
As screwed up as this world is today is a RESULT of our "self-sufficiency"
We who have that personal relationship with Christ don't "grow old living in His basement" as seen here:
James 1:3-5 (New International Version)
3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.
We are "complete" WHEN we belong to Christ, because we are forgiven of our sins & our realtionship is restored with God the Father.
We are "complete" BY belonging to Christ-NOT being independent of Him.
We are "complete" BY following Christ, for it is obvious that we ARE incapable of living without Him & letting HIM lead us!
